3D Rig Red

In 2008, P+S TECHNIK offered the first commercially available 3D Stereo Rig.  They have now extended their range of products for stereo cinematography to include tools for every creative idea, with freedom of choice.

Motorization

All 3D Stereo Rigs offered by P+S TECHNIK can be motorized using a standard lens control system.  Setups have currently been tested with Cmotion and Chrosziel lens control systems. Further tests to certify other systems are planned.

P+S Technik worked in coorperation with Director of Photography Alain Derobe, an experienced steroscopic cinematographer, and 3D Specialist/Engineer Florian Maier, to develop this precision innovative product.

Add a new dimension to your films – literally -- by creating stereoscopic films without the limitations of a side-by-side system.

With the newly developed 3D Mirror Rig by P+S Technik, you can use the cameras and lenses you want.  The 3D Rig supports most of today’s popular cameras, from HDV to 4K.

Mirror Rigs from P+S Technik allow overlapping the images of both cameras regardless the size of the cameras to achieve very narrow interaxial distances for perfectly beautiful close-up and detail shots.  The Mirror Rigs are necessarily limited to a certain maximum interaxial distance defined by the size of the mirror box.  As such, the focal length and size of the camera should determine the size of the Mirror Box used.

A sophisticated calibration mechanism allows adjustment of two cameras accurately and easily to save you  time on set.   The 3D Rig masters all kinds of applications from 2D recording:  shoot with a tripod, on a crane or even with a Steadicam.

Full 3D Flexibility

  • Normal tripod shooting
  • Hand held (Hand held rig)
  • Steadicam shooting (with balancing option)
  • Crane shooting (with balancing option)
  • Motorized and manual versions available.

1.  A Description of the Primary Components of the 3D Stereo Rig

The Mirror Box

The Mirror Box is used to house the 50/50 Mirror.  Currently, the mirror box is available in two sizes: Medium Cine Mirror Box and Standard HD Mirror Box.  Included with the mirror box are a top flag and two side flags (French Flag set), a front protection glass in a frame, and a 50/50 mirror mounted in a frame.  Adjustments are made to the angle and depth of the mirror based on the interaxial distance and focal length of the lenses used.  (Standard mirror box shown)

Mirror Box

The Tripod Adapter

The Tripod Adapter provides a stable base to which the Mirror Box is attached.  The adapter purchased should correspond to the mirror box selected.  (HD tripod adapter shown)

Tripod Adapter

The Camera Adapters

The Camera Adapter allows you to precisely adjust the interaxial (the distance between the optical axis of the cameras) and the angulation (convergence) of the two cameras.  The camera adapters also allow for the attachment of specific camera plates (onto which the cameras are affixed) and the attachment of motor brackets for use with Cmotion and Chrosziel lens control systems.  The Camera Adapter comes as a set of two adapters; one for the horizontally positioned camera, and one for the vertically positioned camera. The camera adapter provides forward-back positioning of the camera in relation to the mirror.  The horizontal camera adapter also provides the control for lateral positioning (interaxial) of the camera as well as the angulation control for the horizontal camera.  (HD camera adapters shown)

Camera Plates

Camera Plates come in different heights and are sized and configured specifically for the camera you will use on the 3D Stereo Rig.   Camera Plates come in sets of two, one for each of the camera adapters.

Light Protection Rings

The Light Protection Rings snap into place on the Mirror Box and provide a "seal" between the lens and the Mirror Box, preventing any stray light from entering the mirror box. The light protection rings come in sets of 2 and are available in four sizes.  The correct size is determined by the ouside diameter of the lenses you will utilize.  These rings are necessary and required in the use of the 3D Stereo Rig.

Carbon Frame Rods

The Carbon Frame Rods are what holds all the pieces together.  The Mirror Box, the Tripod Adapter and the Camera Adapters are all clamped to these rods to form a complete assembly.  These rods come in three lengths, your choice is determined by the total length of your camera and lens combination.

Motor Brackets

Motor Brackets are available for the motorization of the linear adjustment (interaxial) and for the motorization of the angulation adjustment (convergence).

Calibration Tool

The Calibration Tool helps in the positioning of the the Camera Adapters, thus allowing for a faster assembly of the 3D Stereo Rig for your camera.
